If you’re using company surveys to track trends over time, it’s important to know how question wording affects historical data.
When you change the wording of a survey question, the historical trend data for that question is lost. Even very small changes—like adding punctuation, swapping a single word (for example, “colleagues” to “team”), or rephrasing part of the sentence—will break the connection between past and future surveys.
Bob treats the updated question as a new question, which resets the trend analysis baseline.
To keep trend data intact, the question must remain 100% identical across surveys, including:
- Exact wording
- Punctuation
- Formatting
- What you can do instead
If you want to keep historical trends while still improving clarity, here are a few options:
- Keep the original wording unchanged to preserve trend analysis.
- Add clarification in the survey introduction or instructions, without editing the question text itself
- Update the question wording intentionally, knowing this will start a new trend baseline going forward
If you do choose to change the wording, you’ll still be able to use Trends over time—but only for responses collected from that point onward.
